Walter Eugene Gutensohn, 89, of Gnadenhutten died early Monday morning of March 28, 2016 in Riverside Manor in Newcomerstown. Walter was born in Gnadenhutten to the late James E. and Ethel P. Glass Gutensohn on March 18, 1927. He graduated from Gnadenhutten High School in 1945 where he played basketball. He then entered the Army in June of 1945 during WWII. After leaving the Army, Walter became an auto body technician and worked in different body shops throughout his career. He retired from Ferris in 1993.
Walter married Charlotte Albaugh on October 7, 1951; she preceded him in death on March 16, 1988. On April 25, 1992, he married Rosemary Ridgeway Page, who preceded him in death on March 20, 2014. He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Julie Bente.
Walter was a lifetime member of the John Heckewelder Memorial Moravian Church. He received his 65th year pin from the Port Washington Lodge #202 of the F&AM Masonic Lodge, in Gnadenhutten. Walter enjoyed restoring antique cars and traveling in the motorhome.
Walter was father to Pamela Sue (Richard) Fouts, and Robert Allen (Sherry) Gutensohn, both of Gnadenhutten, step-father to Marla (Tony) Gardner of Georgia, grandfather to John (Sallie) Fouts of Akron, James (Christin) Fouts of Gnadenhutten, Michael Gutensohn and Daniel Gutensohn both of Columbus, Craig Bente and Terry Bente both of South Carolina, and he was great-grandfather to five.
Services for Walter will be Thursday, March 31, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the John Heckewelder Memorial Moravian Church in Gnadenhutten, with Rev. Darrell Johnson officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Gnadenhutten-Clay Union Cemetery. Calling hours, also held at the Moravian Church, will be from 5 PM to 8 PM on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 with a Masonic Service starting at 7:45 PM and also one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to the John Heckewelder Memorial Moravian Church in Gnadenhutten, Riverside Memory Care Unit, or Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County.
