Melvin Duhamel Obituary

Melvin Dale “Pid” Duhamel, 81, of Newcomerstown died in his home on Wednesday morning of June 22, 2022, following aging health issues.

Pid, as he was known to his friends and family, was born on December 26, 1940, to the late Sherman and Mildred (Kennedy) Duhamel. He graduated from Newcomerstown High School in 1959 then attained his certificate at the Ohio State Barber College. Pid worked as a barber for a few years before starting at the Gen Corp. company in Newcomerstown from where he retired in 1996 after thirty plus years.

Pid got his nickname from always fixing and working on things. It was his hobby and he enjoyed doing it, from building his own home, and helping with the construction of his daughter’s homes, to woodworking and building furniture, to helping family and friends with any projects they had going. When he wasn’t piddling with things, Pid liked to spend time boating on the lake with his grandchildren, and time with his dog.

He was a husband to Sharon (Lanning) of the home, father to three daughters: Tammy (Brian) Emler of Newcomerstown, Brenda (Dan) Knotts of Hinsdale IL, and Chris Olsen of Dover; Paps to seven grandchildren: Lauren (Brit) Hostetler, Blair (Olivia) Emler, Courtney (Jake) Hursey, Devin (Martyna) Knotts, Jacob (Lauren) Knotts, Danielle (Peter) Flood, and Taylor Olsen; Paps to thirteen great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law to Linda Lanning, and uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, Pid was preceded in death by three siblings and their spouses: Kenny (Bonnie) Duhamel, Don (Betty) Duhamel, and Jeanette (Jim) Baugher; and an infant sister Mary.

Following Pid’s wishes, he will be cremated, and burial will take place on a later date at West Union Cemetery in Gilmore. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.kochfhgnaden.com.
