Berdena F. Duncan, 88, of Gnadenhutten, died Saturday afternoon of August 17, 2019 following a well lived life. Berdena was the daughter to the late Dale Thompson and Ara (Hauenstein) Thompson Dupler. She was born in Athens, Ohio on May 23, 1931 and graduated from Athens High School in 1949. She married the late James F. Duncan on May 28, 1949, who preceded her in death on July 31, 1991.
Berdena worked for the Schreiner Brothers Hardware and Village Hardware for 27 years as the store clerk, retiring sometime in the mid 1990’s. She was also a homemaker and kept very busy within the community of Gnadenhutten. She was a member of the John Heckewelder Memorial Moravian Church, where she was President of the trustees. She was also a member of The Order of the Eastern Star, Arbutus Chapter #288, where she held position in all chairs. She was also the first woman to serve on the town counsel for the Village of Gnadenhutten. In her spare time, Berdena enjoyed quilting.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda (James) Egler of Gnadenhutten, and Jan (Ted) Beal of Tuscarawas, son-in-law Jerry Conaway of Brecksville, Ohio, four grandchildren Becky (John) Peach, Jennifer Long, Matthew (Rhonda) Long, and Kerry (Michael Whytsell) Egler-Whytsell, seven great-grandchildren, brother Louis Thompson of Massillon, and several nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents and husband, Berdena is preceded in death by a daughter Pamela Conaway and brothers Edwin Thompson and Norman Dupler.
Services will be held Tuesday, August 20, 2019, at 12:00 p.m. at Koch Funeral Home, LLC of Gnadenhutten, 244 North Walnut Street, 44629. Pastor Tom Klaserner will be officiating the service. Burial will follow in the Gnadenhutten-Clay Union Cemetery. Calling hours will be two hours prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter, 408 9th St SW, Canton, Ohio 44707.
