Gary Arthur Green, age 79, of Deersville died at home early Friday morning of August 2, 2019 after a short illness. Born January 27, 1940 in Morristown, Ohio, he was a son of the late Clovis James Green and Doris Wilma Smith Green.
He was a 1957 graduate of Bethesda High School. He joined the United States Army in 1958 and was proud to be a DUWK driver for the army. He received a medical discharge in 1959. Gary worked for McCormick Sawmill in Bethesda during high school and a few years after he was discharged from the Army, then he worked fo. Karl Kumberling Tree Service in Washington, PA when he was hired in 1962 by GTE / Verizon. He retired from Verizon after 29 years where he was a line maintenance supervisor.
He was a member of the Tusco Gun Club, Tusco Radio Club, and he volunteered his time taking care of putting the flags on veterans graves for memorial day services in Harrison County. He also participated in the 21 Gun Salute at Patterson Union Cemetery, Deersville on Memorial Day. He never hesitated to lift a hand to help anyone in need. He was baptized at the Christian Church in Bethesda. He loved spending a lot of time at Deersville General Store with the old folks solving world problems. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and NASCAR fan.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 57 years, Janice Carolyn Hatton Green. They were married January 6, 1962. Also surviving are a son, Mickey Lee Green of Deersville; two daughters: Melissa (Jeffrey) Hopper of Dayton and Michelle (Travis) Calmez of Tacoma, WA; a brother, Don (Laura) Green of Summersville, SC; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by five siblings James Green, Edward “Bud” Green, Katherine Deffinbaugh, Audrey Gibbons, and a stillborn brother, Larry Deffinbaugh.
Visitation for family and friends will be held in Koch Funeral Home LLC, 244 N. Walnut Street, Gnadenhutten on Saturday, August 10, 2019 from 11 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Cremation will follow and a private memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at his home at a later date.
