Mary Irene Walker Gibbens, 89, of Uhrichsville, died Tuesday evening October 21, at Schoenbrunn Health Care. Mary was born on December 2, 1924 in Elco, Pennsylvania to the late Isiah and Annie (Atwood) Walker. She graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1942.

After high school, Mary worked as a Nurse’s Aide at Union Hospital, then as a seamstress at Sales Department Store in Uhrichsville, She then went on to be bookkeeper for Truck Sales and Service in Midvale, and for Kohl Lumber in Uhrichsville.

Mary married Charles “Bud” Gibbens on February 28, 1945 and was married to him for 42 years before Bud died on March 19, 1987.

During World War II, Mary worked on airplanes; one in particular was the tail section of the Black Widow P61 Bomber.

Mary was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Dennison. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, crocheting, macramé, baking, cooking, and spending time with her great-grandchildren and her dog Charlie.

Mary is survived by a daughter, Sally Rehard of Uhrichsville, two grandchildren: Keith (Diane) Thiebaud of Millersburg; and Tammy Rehard of Uhrichsville, three great-grandchildren: Kristen Thiebaud (fiancé Josh Newton), Allison Thiebaud (fiancé Chris Beck), and Casey Redman and one brother, Edward Theodore “Ted” (Irene) Walker of Columbus. 

Along with her parents and husband, Mary is preceded in death by sisters: Alice Phillips, Hilda Melvin, Elizabeth Walker, and Ada Walker Martinelli, and brothers: Joseph, George, Harry, Albert, William, and Alfred Walker.

Services will be at 1:30 PM on Friday, October 24, 2014 at the John Heckwelder Memorial Moravian Church with Rev. Darrell Johnson officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Gnadenhutten-Clay Union Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Community Hospice of Tuscaraas County.
