             E. Grace (Zimmerman) Day, age 97, of Gnadenhutten, passed away Sunday, December 18, 2016 in Newcomerstown, Ohio. A lifelong resident of Gnadenhutten, Grace was born in Clay Township on June 10, 1919 to the late Joseph Ernest and Ida Romaine (Gram) Zimmerman.

            Grace was a graduate of the 1937 class of Gnadenhutten High School. She continued her education at Muskingum College, where she graduated in 1946 after completion of four years of study. She went on to receive a Master’s degree in Education from Kent State University in 1970. She spent a career in education that spanned 34 years, teaching at Goosefoot, Frys Valley, York Twp., New Philadelphia, Canton City, and retiring from Dover City schools after 18 years in 1976.

            Grace was an active member of the John Heckewelder Memorial Moravian Church, where she participated in the choir, bell choir, Women’s Fellowship, and as Archivist of Church, as well as teaching Sunday school and directing the Junior Choir. She was also a dynamic community member, participating in Buckeye Senior Citizens, Delta Kappa Gamma of Tuscarawas and Harrison County, Life Member of Tuscarawas County Historical Society, Gnadenhutten Historical Society, and Tuscarawas County and Ohio Teacher’s Associations.  Grace enjoyed quilling as a hobby, crafting beautiful art pieces of paper filigree.  She took pleasure in reading, bowling, and the outdoors; especially enjoying working in the yard, and gardening flowers and vegetables. Grace loved to travel, with her journeys taking her to Hawaii; Alberta, Canada; the Moravian Center in Europe; and to Moravian Mission work in Ontario, Canada.

            Grace is survived by her nephew, Dave (Sherry) Zimmerman of Gnadenhutten and their children, Kari Zimmerman of Tuscarawas, Valerie (Steven) Overstreet, and Joe (Christy) Zimmerman of Texas, Jeff and (Nina) Farrow of Lock 17, Jennifer Farrow of Gnaden, Tony Farrow of New Philadelphia. She is also an aunt to Marilyn Rainsberg and Janet Zimmerman of Dover, Ron Zimmerman of Dover, Bob Zimmerman of Berea, and Russell Galbraith of Dennison, and Wesley Galbraith of Florida, also surviving is Grace’s step-children, Daniel Day of Arizona and Jennie Day of Michigan, along with numerous great-great nieces and nephews and great-great-great nieces and nephews.   

            Grace was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Ernie, and Fred Zimmerman, and her twin sister Ruth Baker.

            Services for Grace will be held at 11:30 AM on Friday, December 23, 2016 at the John Heckewelder Memorial Moravian Church with Rev. Darrell Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Gnadenhutten-Clay Union Cemetery. Calling hours will be prior to the service Friday, from 10 AM to 11:30 AM. Memorial contributions to honor Grace may be made to the John Heckewelder Memorial Moravian Church.
